My name's Amy and I am the new secretary and activism liaison officer for the ACT Vegan & Vegetarian Society. I've been lacto-ovo vegetarian since I was about 7 or 8 - the moment I made the connection between the furry animals I loved and what was on my plate. No one else in my family is veg, so it was a challenge at times but many years later I'm very glad I stuck to my principles and didn't let my parents sway me (my Dad loves to tell the story that my first sentence ever was "you're not the boss of me"). I was never involved in... |

I’m in my 30s and married with one beautiful 6-month old girl called Nieve. I’ve been vegetarian since 1998 after attending an incredible presentation by a Melbourne based nutritionist, John Toomey. Since then I’ve been an on-again off-again Vegan and have not worn leather for about 8 years. I’ve managed to maintain a Vegetarian lifestyle despite travelling extensively through Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific in the last 10 years. This includes living for a year as a vegan while working and travelling through Sierra... |

I gradually became vegetarian through the late eighties, first influenced by a close friend and the process completed by my newly vegetarian son who came up from Melbourne to live with me while he attended ANU. The idea of veganism was not on the horizon. I didn't know anyone who was vegan and just didn't consider it as an option.
I was a fairly passive vegetarian for many years - I simply felt it was wrong to kill for meat. I was aware of some of the issues to do with animal use but generally only the most blatantly cruel. I did have an... |

I entered a photo of my raw, vegan, nutritious, delicious green smoothie in 666 ABC Canberra’s Feast: Show us your Breakfast competition – and won! The prize: tickets to see George Benson live in concert at the Enlighten festival, and backstage admission to meet the great man too!
I was motivated to enter the competition equally by the chance of meeting George Benson and the opportunity to promote a vegan alternative to breakfasts that are so often reliant on animal exploitation – particularly dairy milk.
A recently awakened convert... |

In 1999 I decided to leave my comfortable inner city existence and move to a small rural village just outside of Canberra to assist some friends with their property. It was a chance to put my beliefs into action as I would be living and caring for numerous unwanted and rescued animals. While only intending to be a year-long commitment I enjoyed being hands-on with animals so much that I decided to make it a permanent move.
In January 2001, I took possession of a cleared five acre block of land and spent the next 18 months transforming it... |

I have been a vegetarian for nearly 30 years. There are so many 'categories' of vegetarian these days - so I'll just add to that by saying my diet is 'satvik' vegetarian which means no eggs, onions, garlic, mushrooms and of course no eating of dead animals! I also stopped eating dairy products in June w011. No alcohol and drugs are also part of the diet - and I avoid coffee as well. This way of eating is followed by many of the Taiwanese Buddhists and also by many people in India. It's also the diet of the Hare Krnsa's so those of you who... |

My brain cancer story starts in 95 with really invasive right temporal lobe surgery for a malignant brain tumour- an astocytoma/glioma. I was lucky according to the Canberra neurosurgeon that it was low grade and discovered fairly early. It was the following treatment and years of medication that really had the most impact on my life...that nearly ended in 2004.
I didn't even know what a tumour was. My parents were called and told I couldn't drive so I had to move back home with my 2 children who were under 6. Six weeks before we'd... |

I'd like to get people thinking about the diversity of vegan options available in Canberra. In this article I'd like to hopefully give ideas to those vegetarians that feel sometimes it is just a "little to hard" and particularly for those wannabe vegans that felt that vegetarianism is hard enough. So "A Vegan's Life"' will offer some inspiration. Gorman House Epic may offer the Farmers' Market but Gorman House (the arts centre in Braddon on Ainslie Avenue) offers vegetarian and vegan treats on Saturdays. From about 10am 'til sometime... |
