New Opening Days/Hours

Hey there!

As of Monday the 19th of April 2012 we will be changing the opening hours of the Food Coop. They will be changing to:

  • Weekdays (Mon-Fri): 10am-7pm
  • Saturday: 10am-4pm
  • Sunday: closed

The management collective has decided to do this for three key reasons:

  • Manager work/life balance: We get most of our food deliveries on Monday. Previously, this has meant that a manager has to come in on one of their days off. By opening on Monday, the managers, coordinators and volunteers can both take deliveries and run the shop, saving time.
  • Small sales: Sunday are usually our smallest trading day.
  • More intuitive opening hours: Finally, the new shopping hours are more intuitive for customers new and old. On Mondays and Wednesday evenings, there have often been customers coming to the door wanting to shop. The new hours will facilitate this.

We completely recognise that this change may affect some people. We have endeavoured to keep the hours as inclusive as possible – we are still open one day on the weekend, and in the evenings.

These changes will be publicized on the website, Facebook, twitter, and in-store.

  • Monday 19th: Open 10am-7pm
  • Tuesday 20th: Open 10am-7pm
  • Wednesday 21th: Open 10am-7pm
  • Thursday 22th: Open 10am-7pm
  • Friday23th: Open 10am-7pm

More Info about the Coop

We are a not-for-profit food co-op that knows good food. We carry local, fresh, organic, sustainable, natural, Fair Trade, ethical, bulk and affordable products.

Members own the Co-op, share the benefits of it and have the opportunity to work in it. The Co-op is managed with consensus-based decision making and all members are invited to participate. The Co-op employs three part time managers. Members act as volunteer co-ordinators staffing the store, and perform the other tasks required to keep the Co-op operating.

Everyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op, but members receive a 20% discount if they volunteer 1 hour per month. Membership is individual and charged on a sliding scale according to income. The Membership year starts in July; if you join after then, the membership charge is reduced proportionately.  Membership fees for 2011 are:

$25.00 for members with a low income (less than$20k/yr)
$35.00 for members with a medium income  ($20k to $45k/yr)
$45.00 for members with a high income (more than$45k/yr)

If you’d like to become a member, ask the volunteer at the counter for a form.  New members receive a 20% discount on their first shop at the Co-op.

After that, members will receive a 20% discount if they volunteer for 1 hour per month. There’s also a further 10% discount if you place a bulk order.

The very popular Lunches at the Food Co-op are back this year, in our new home on Kingsley Street! $4 for students and members of the Food Co-op and $5 for everyone else.

Lunches are put on by the Food Co-op and a team of amazing volunteers. Volunteering with the lunch service is a great way of meeting new people, and learning about yummy food and developing your cooking skills, plus you get a free lunch!
